QUITE POSSIBLY THE BEST BRUNCH IN GLASGOW!
| Follow: @potluck.glasgow |
It’s no secret that Potluck does one of the best brunches in Glasgow, it’s probably the worst kept secret on Instagram from what I can tell. Every time I go online I see another picture of the hot cakes that everyone has been raving about. If I’m honest it was these pictures that convinced me I had to go and check it out myself.
So after a few beers at The XX a couple of weeks ago and the promise of a Thursday free from work I took my chance. The hardest thing about deciding to go here for me was the lack of a menu to browse online as you may have noticed I like to browse menu’s before I arrive. But what’s life without a little risk eh?
It’s also located in a great spot over on the south side, a short walk from Queens Park and right next to Lebowski’s and The Bungo (another on my to-do list). I needn’t have been worried about the menu as there was plenty of choice and the worst thing about my visit here was trying to decide what to order!
As I said, narrowing the menu down was possibly the hardest thing at Potluck but I guess that just means more opportunities to visit and try something new. The first thing I noticed on the menu was surprisingly not food. In the soft drinks section they had Bundaberg ginger beer which is a favourite of mine, not least because I spent 5 months living there during my travels.
So after ordering my Bundy ginger beer and a latte to stave off the effects of the previous nights beer I set about deciding on the food. The good thing about going to these places with my little lady is she’s as happy as me trying new foods and sharing dishes which means I can work through more of the menus of the places we visit!
This meant we ordered 4 dishes from the great menu at Potluck: the breakfast stack; chilli pork, pistachio peach hot cakes and the banh mi fries. The easiest way to do this is probably just to go through each dish individually and tell you why it was so bloody delicious!
First up was the breakfast stack, to say it was my least favourite is probably doing it a disservice but it’s just because the other dishes were so good! There’s a little bit of everything in this dish and that’s not a bad thing. You can’t really see it in the picture but there’s a massive chunk of bread propping it all up. The star of this dish for me though, without doubt, was the chilli jam. It was the perfect mix of sweet and hot and complimented everything beautifully.
On top of the bread there’s a generous serving of spinach, smoked bacon (the best of the bacons) and scrambled egg. There’s also a large helping of garlic thyme mushrooms on the side which I was more than happy to have to myself as the little lady doesn’t approve. The black pudding was an added extra as was the halloumi I opted for because as many will agree, cheese makes everything better!
If I went back I don’t know if I’d order this dish again, not because I didn’t like it though just because there’s others I’d like to try. I’d also probably ask for a side of the chilli jam with whatever I ordered as it was that good.
Next up was the chilli pork and what a delicious dish this was. I’ll admit that my time in Australia made me particularly keen on avocados as it was a staple of most brunch places there but that wasn’t the highlight of this dish. Neither was the chilli pork for that matter, as good as it was. No the best thing about this dish was the cheddar jalapeno hash browns!
It may not have been the best part of this dish but I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention how good the chilli pork was. The slow braised pork shoulder was cooked perfectly and covered in a delicious chilli sauce which when coupled with the hash browns was pretty excellent.
In truth everything in this dish was delicious when coupled with another part of it or every part for that matter. The avocado, sour cream and salsa were the perfect accompaniment to the pork and hash browns.
My first impression when I seen fries on the menu was that it was a strange option for a brunch, then I remembered that I love fries, especially fried topped with all manners of things. These banh mi fries were spectacular, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect but they were delicious.
The fries themselves were good but the hot sauce and mayo on the top were delicious, as were the various other toppings which I sadly forget exactly what they were. If you go to Potluck then order these is basically what I’m saying. I also have it on good authority the Lebanese fries are equally as good but that’s something I’ll need to find out next time!
I guess that leaves what we’ll call the dessert course of brunch; pistachio peach hot cakes. I’d say without doubt these hot cakes must be the most Instagrammed food dish on my Instagram and probably one of the main reasons I wanted to try this place so much. They didn’t disappoint either!
These pancakes were something else, I mean they were amazing. I’m not usually a fan of fruit with pancakes, I’m more of a bacon and maple syrup kinda guy but the roast peaches were delicious. The orange blossom honey was a more than able deputy as well for my preferred maple syrup. The rest of the dish was unbelievable as well.
The pistachios scattered over the whole dish were a nice touch and the pistachio kulfi (traditional Indian ice cream) was delicious. The pashmak (Iranian candy floss) was also delightful, I didn’t know what it was let alone what it would taste like when I saw it on the menu but like everything else in Potluck they got it right!
At the start of this post I said this was probably the best brunch in Glasgow but after writing this post I’m convinced it’s the best in Glasgow. I can’t imagine sitting down to better tasting table than the one pictured above but if anyone disagrees I’m always open to trying new places so let me know.
If you haven’t been to Potluck then go, it’s really that simple. The food is great, the vibe is laid back and chilled and there’s friendly staff on hand to talk you through any menu questions you might have. Price-wise as well it’s very reasonable and what you get is definitely worth what you pay!
In the words of Mrs Doyle: Go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on!!!
